Purbeck 8 — Black Leather

Purbeck 8 is our take on the everyday black trainer, clean, understated and designed to go with almost anything. Made from beautifully soft, ethically sourced Leather Working Group GOLD certified black leather, it combines the natural movement of a barefoot shoe with a more refined, everyday silhouette.

Built around the principles of barefoot footwear, Purbeck 8 has a wide toe box that gives your toes room to spread naturally, a zero-drop profile and our own flexible custom-designed sole, complete with Wingate’s signature tiny turtle.

Inside, a natural cork footbed sits underfoot, while organic cotton laces complete the upper.

Designed with less plastic

We wanted to challenge how much plastic really needs to go into a modern shoe.

Traditional synthetic toe and heel reinforcement materials have been replaced with reinforced cotton, and we've swapped conventional plastic lace ends for bio-acetate alternatives.

Where we haven't yet been able to eliminate plastic, we've looked for better options. The stitching uses recycled PET thread, with approximately the equivalent of two small plastic bottles repurposed in every pair.

Our outsole is made from synthetic rubber. We haven't dressed that up as something it's not: at the moment, we haven't found a more sustainable alternative that gives us the combination of flexibility, durability, performance and attainable price that we require. We'll keep looking.
